林仁杰Jonathan

Hi, I'm glad to come to China again after 2 years!

Jesse
Hey, it's my first time to be here, I hope I can speak Chinese fluently one day!

Jonathan
My name is Jonathan Boom, or 林仁杰. My hometown is Rotterdam, one of the biggest cities in the Netherlands with 650,000 people and is mostly known for its port and architecture.

My undergraduate major was Trade Management with Asia. As a part of this study, I lived in Shanghai for a year in 2016. The beautiful oriental city left me with a delight memory.
Upon returning to the Netherlands, I decided to work for a while before going back to school to finish my studies. Right now, I’ve been back in Shanghai for a little over 2 months.

Jesse

My name is Jesse van den Boomen, or 林俊杰. I’m a 22 year old Dutch MBA student.

Before coming to SUFE, at the age of 16, I went to Barcelona for 6 months to study the Spanish language. Afterwards I started with my bachelors in International Business from which I graduated last summer.

During this 4-year bachelor, I did my internship in Barcelona at a company that sells ecological food. Furthermore, in the fourth year, I enjoyed a 6-month study abroad at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea. The overseas experiences really broaden my mind and make me eager for more. Thus, I come to China, one of the most vibrant economies in the world, to enrich my life even more.

林仁杰 & 林俊杰 with their Full-time MBA classmates

Q1  What made you decide to come to China and more specifically, what made you choose to study in SUFE MBA?

As an important component of economic development and cultural heritage, China has become more and more attractive among college students in recent years. I have witnessed drastic changes upon my return after just 3 years. I believe I can achieve even more than I can imagine with smart people and unrelenting tides of new business models here.

To know how the business goes and will go, SUFE, the most prestigious business academic institute in China, will definitely equip its student with the ability to seize the moment and fulfill their dreams.

When applying for MBA program, I found that almost all worldwide trading enterprises from the Netherlands have cooperation with China, a prevailing economy nowadays.

So that’s the reasonI chose to study in China at the first place. Furthermore, SUFE is the best Chinese university in the genre of finance and economics. The courses of the SUFE MBA are closely connected to what I want to obtain in the future. I would like to explore more in the top of commercial field.

Q2 How do you feel about SUFE MBA after studying here for 2 months? Which course would you think is the most difficult? Have you met any special challenges in your studies? How did you overcome them?

Undeniably, the quality of the courses and professors is incomparable. The professors provide us with plenty of vivid cases related to actual businesses operations, with many cases drawn from notable business schools like Harvard Business School. As for me, the statistics class is the most difficult course because of the complexity of statistic theories and formula. Meanwhile, both statistics and financial classes are helping me a lot. By using data from different systems, I am able to create forecasting models
independently for future sales conditions.

The language has been a challenge for me. Although I can speak Dutch, English, Spanish and Korean fluently, Chinese seems much more difficult than any other languages. However, I will definitely focus on the improvement of my Chinese during my stay in China, in the short term, I aim to pass the HSK examination.

Q3 China deepens its ties with the Netherlands by strengthening trade cooperation. As the terminal stop of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, the Netherlands is China's second largest trading partner and an important foreign investment destination in the EU. Do you think there will be more career opportunities since we have promoted the process of globalization and multilateral trade mutually?

China’s reform and opening-up will bring outstanding benefits to the world. Just recently, the Chinese government strengthened the trade-cooperation with Greece, which is among the first countries in the EU to sign an intergovernmental cooperation document with China aiming to promote cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative. China is now ready to import more high-quality agricultural products from Greece to provide Chinese consumers with more choices, and also hopes Greece (even entire Europe) will open its market wider to Chinese companies and products, which will create new opportunities for the development of the mechanism as well as for China-EU relations. As for business opportunities for the Dutch, I believe that the cooperation would provide plenty of new opportunities for both sides, especially to the group who is engaged in bilateral trade. I will involve myself with the trading industry as well and am very optimistic with the future.

The rapid development of bilateral economic and trade relations will provide more chances for both countries. As far as I’m concerned, the Belt and Road initiative will most certainly accelerate the career opportunities and deepen cooperation not only for Chinese, but also for Dutch citizens who chose to study and work in China.

Q4 Shanghai recently held The 2nd China International Import Expo, in your opinion, how will this kind of Expo lift up China’s, especially Shanghai’s economic development?

The CIIE shows the shift in attitude of China from an export-oriented economy towards an import-oriented economy. As a milestone in China's meteoric rise as a world power, the CIIE represents the development of China in not only exporting but also in importing products.

I agree with what Jonathan said, I’m glad to see that China has shown the attitude of opening door to all entrepreneurs around the world, which symbolizes a great trend of creating a better business environment. As the largest annual international trade event in China, The CIIE creates the potential for increased imports and broaden market access to foreign traders. As competitiveness for both local and global enterprises rises, they will put more efforts on their productions.

Q5 In 2019, the turnover of TMall ”11.11" reached 268.4 billion rmb. E-commerce have become a new trend of consumption in China. Have you experienced the so-called four “new Great Inventions” in China? (refers to high-speed rail, electronic payment systems, sharing bike and online shopping)

I’ve known that brilliant Chinese e-commerce businessmen developed 11.11 to be a shopping day. Although I'm not good at finding bargains as most Chinese shoppers are, I still managed to buy a MI air purifier and some other small things with a great discount. It has saved me around ¥ 1200. A good bargain, huh?

Over the past few years, four new Great Inventions in China have boosted convenience in all aspects of our life. For example, it took me less than 30 minutes to travel from Shanghai to Wuxi by high-speed rail yesterday. China has invested a lot in developing its domestic infrastructure and now it begins to harvest the big reward of economic boom.
Besides, bike-sharing has also greatly improved inner-city’s commuting efficiency. Even though Ofo, once the biggest sharing bike projects in China, has gone out of business. The idea of bike-sharing has laid foundation for more creative methods to change people’s life. Likewise, as a country of great vision, China has been popularizing quick-payment methods since 2016. With the advantages of convenient and safe, quick payment changed the trend of future consumption to a great extent.

The Chinese government has been devoted to improving infrastructure and transportation for a long time. My family owns a construction company. Naturally, I pay great attention to the construction industry and notice that the construction efficiency in China is impressive. For an example, Beijing Daxing International Airport, a supersized international comprehensive hub of transportation, took only 4-5 years to complete, which is hard to imagine in the other parts of the world. In terms of the e-commerce, Taobao is highly-developed as it indeed changes the way of consumption. In the Netherlands, CoolBlue is a very popular and famous online shopping company, but it still has to open physical shops to boost its sales. There are still quite a few people would not trust online shopping as they still like to test a product before purchasing.

Q6 Do you have any plans for the forthcoming new year? Which industry and occupation will you choose?

I have two goals in China, one is to achieve my MBA diploma successfully and the other one would be to improve my Chinese. In terms of future occupation, I will focus on integrating the construction industry resources and promote the business of my family’s company. By the way, I love music. Maybe someday you’ll hear my songs in QQ music.

I would like to seek more opportunities in the food and beverage industry. Currently, I work for the Swiss Butchery as a system management intern. The company has four physical locations in Shanghai and will expand even further in the coming years. I cherish my work opportunity there and wishfully I can be a good promote of the food and beverage industry between China and Europe.

What do you usually do to enrich your spare time?

Play football and badminton with my Chinese friends!

Travel! But currently I will pay more attention on studying!

If you could choose three dishes from your homeland, what would you chose?

Dutch cheese, Boen enkool stamppot
(荷兰国菜-炖羽衣甘蓝)
 frikandel speciaal(荷式烤肠)

Could you recommend 2 most attractive places in your hometown?

Skyline in Rotterdan and Dutch caenaval What’s your favorite business book?
